Before They Leave the Place
November is when a lot of weaned calves head to town. Before they load, there is one number worth having in your own hands: what they weigh at home.
Know your shrink before the sale barn tells you
Calves lose weight on the way to town from stress, time off feed and water, and the haul itself. That is called shrink, and it is normal. Many sales also take a pencil shrink, a set percentage off the weight, so what you get paid on is lower than what the calves weighed in your pen. Without a home weight, you have no way to tell how much of the difference is real and how much is the sale’s number.
A home weight gives you something to check against
Weigh before you load, write it down, and compare it to the ticket you get back. A small difference is expected. A big one is worth a question, and you can only ask that question if you have your own number to point to.
It helps with the sell or hold call
Knowing what a set of calves actually weighs lets you look at today’s market and decide whether to sell now or hold them a few more weeks. Guessing leads to being short or giving weight away.
Make sure the scale is reading true
A home weight is only as good as the scale behind it. If yours has not been checked since spring, get it looked at before sale day. Every scale we build is NTEP certified and sits above ground, so there is no pit to collect mud and water.
