Winterize Your Livestock Scale
Before Cold Weather Hits

Cold weather changes how a scale behaves, and October is the window to deal with it before the first hard freeze does the deciding for you. A little attention now is a lot cheaper than a breakdown in January.

Cold affects a scale differently than heat, but it still affects it

Just like the summer heat we talk about every July, temperature swings in the fall and winter can cause small shifts in a reading. Moisture that freezes and thaws around a junction box or cable connection creates its own set of problems, and ice buildup around a platform can interfere with how smoothly it settles. None of this means the scale is broken. It means the season is working against it, the same way heat does in the summer.

What to check before the first freeze

A few things are worth a look before winter sets in. Junction boxes and cable connections should be checked for moisture or corrosion before cold makes them worse. Drainage around the platform should be clear, since standing water that freezes can cause more trouble than the water itself. And if your scale has not been calibrated since spring or summer, fall is a good time to confirm it is still reading true before winter conditions make everything harder to diagnose.

Pitless design helps here too

An above ground, pitless scale has an advantage in winter the same way it does in summer. There is no pit to collect and hold water that freezes and expands, which is one less place for cold weather to cause damage. It is part of why we build every scale this way.

Do not wait until it is a January problem

Once winter sets in, a repair that would have been simple in October can turn into a bigger job, especially if freezing temperatures delay parts, travel, or the work itself. Getting ahead of it now means one less thing to worry about when the weather turns.
