Cow Scale for Sale in Oklahoma:
What to Know Before You Buy
A cow scale is one of the few ranch purchases that pays you back every year. Buying the right one comes down to your herd, your pens and how you sell. Here is how to sort through the options and what to ask any seller.
Why Oklahoma ranchers buy their own cow scale
Cattle are bought and sold by the pound, medicine is dosed by weight, and gain tells you whether your pasture, ration or health program is working. A scale turns all of that from guesses into numbers. If you want the full case, read Why Do You Need a Livestock Scale?
For Oklahoma operations the payoff shows up at specific moments: receiving weights on wheat pasture stockers, weaning and preconditioning, and fall bull and female sales. Our related posts cover each one, listed below.

What to look for when you buy a cattle scale
- Capacity: Rated well above your heaviest animal. Overload protection matters when a bull hits the platform.
- NTEP certification: If you sell by the pound from your scale, you may need legal-for-trade certification. Check your state’s rules.
- Footing and gates: Non-slip flooring and a latch that cannot pop open protect animals and people.
- Indicator and data: Choose a digital indicator that fits how you work, and one that connects to herd management software if you track gain.
- Calibration and service: Ask who calibrates it and how fast they respond when something fails.
- Who builds it: A manufacturer can customize the scale and stand behind it. A reseller may not.
Site prep and installation
A portable scale skips construction, which is why it can qualify for 100% bank financing. A permanent scale needs a concrete pad. For example, an 18′ livestock scale calls for concrete piers and a reinforced approach slab. Soil, frost depth and local code vary, so call us before you pour concrete and we will help you set the dimensions and drainage.
Financing and rentals
Ask your lender about financing a portable scale. If you want to try before you buy, or only need a scale for a sale season, we rent portable flat top scales. See scale rentals and scale services for calibration and repair.
