Getting the Receiving Weight Right
on Wheat Pasture Stockers
October is when wheat pasture stocker cattle start rolling in across Oklahoma, and the number written down the day those cattle arrive follows them through the whole grazing season. If that first weight is off, everything built on top of it is off too.
The receiving weight sets the terms for the whole season
A lot of stocker arrangements, whether it is a cost of gain contract, a custom grazing deal, or a straight purchase, are built around two numbers: what the cattle weighed coming in, and what they weigh going out. The difference between those two numbers is what gets paid on. If the incoming weight is not solid, the whole arrangement is standing on a number nobody can fully trust, and that shows up as a disagreement later, usually at the worst possible time.
Getting that first number right, on a scale that has been checked and is reading true, protects both sides of the deal from the start.
Shrink is already working against you at receiving
Cattle coming off a truck after a long haul are already dealing with shrink from the trip itself, which is normal and expected. What is not something you want to add on top of that is a scale reading that is off in addition to the shrink. Knowing your scale is accurate means the number you record reflects the cattle, not a mix of the cattle and a scale problem.
We build for this kind of volume
Our livestock scales are built to handle the kind of repeated, heavy use that receiving season brings, and every one we manufacture is NTEP certified, so the number on the screen is one that holds up if it is ever questioned. Whether you need a portable scale for a leased pasture or a permanent setup for a receiving yard you use every year, we build both.
If you need something before cattle
start arriving
We know receiving season does not wait, and neither should getting a quote. Call or reach out through our site and we will usually have a quote back to you within a day, two days at the latest. Sooner Scale Inc. has been building truck and livestock scales in Oklahoma since 1976, and receiving season is exactly the kind of work our equipment is built for.
