Why Fall Is the Right Time
to Plan Next Year’s Scale
Every December, we hear from operations trying to get a scale installed before the year is out, and every December, some of them run out of time. Site work, concrete curing, and scheduling all take longer than people expect. Fall is when that planning should actually start.
Waiting until December leaves no room for the real work
A permanent scale installation involves more than setting equipment on the ground. There is site prep, a concrete pad, and time for that pad to cure properly before the scale goes on it. None of that happens overnight, and weather in late fall and early winter can slow it down further. Someone who calls in the first week of December hoping for a working scale by year end is often working against a calendar that will not cooperate.
Starting the conversation in September or October gives enough lead time for site work, ordering, and installation to happen without rushing any of it.
Section 179 is worth knowing about
Section 179 is a federal tax provision that allows a business to deduct the cost of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service, rather than depreciating it over several years. For many operations, that can make buying equipment before year end more attractive than waiting.
We are not tax professionals, and the specifics depend on your business structure and situation, so this is worth a conversation with your accountant before you decide anything. What we can tell you is which equipment options exist and how long installation realistically takes, so you have real numbers to bring into that conversation.
Planning ahead is not just about taxes
Even without a tax deadline in mind, fall is simply a better time to think through a scale purchase than the middle of a busy season. You have time to compare portable and permanent options, decide whether a combo unit makes sense for your operation, and get questions answered before you are under pressure to make a decision fast.
What to do if you are considering it
If a scale purchase has been on your mind for next year, reach out now rather than waiting. We can walk through what would fit your operation, give you a realistic timeline, and let you take that information to your accountant if the year end timing matters to your decision.
